In the last 24 hours, the media is full of non-stop coverage of what Trump said 11 years ago. Trump used terrible language; oh my! A whole list of Republican establishment types who didn't want Trump in the first place are calling on him to resign from the ticket and let Pence run for president. It's the perfect storm. Except it isn't.
It's very hard to watch the media hyperventilate about Trump's statements when we remember their reaction to Bill Clinton actually having repeated sex with an intern in the Oval Office in the White House. We were told over and over by the same people who are now so "outraged" at Trump's statements that what Bill Clinton actually did was "just sex". There are legions of women who say Bill raped or otherwise molested them. These women also say that Hillary led the charge to destroy them if they dared to tell the public of Bill's sex attacks. When that gets brought up, the media ignores it or says that poor Hillary was actually a victim. The difference is that Bill and Hillary Clinton DID these things, while Trump SAID the stuff that they are so upset about.
And the Republican senators who are now so sanctimoniously withdrawing their support are no better. Are we to believe that none of these senators ever said things in private that might be considered really raunchy? I doubt that. John McCain, who just issued a statement, was in the navy. Are we to believed that during his navy days he never deployed "salty" language? We all know better. The only difference is that Trump is on tape.
Lyndon Johnson used to hold meetings with people to whom he wanted to show displeasure when he was on the toilet. John Kennedy had sex with so many women in the White House that they lost count. Anyone who read the Watergate tapes knows that Richard Nixon said things in his office that would have shocked a large section of America. So what.
Just for once, we ought to stop the nonsense. Trump is not running for saint or even to be the pope. He's running to be president. The real question is what would he do in office. That's the same question for Hillary Clinton. The problem is that as we learn more and more about Hillary's plans, they look worse and worse. America is in bad shape right now. We need someone to lead us out of the morass. It's an issue of who will do better not who said what 11 years ago.
