Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is calling Nancy Pelosi's bluff. The senator today introduced a measure in the Senate that would amend the rules governing impeachments so that the House would have a maximum of 25 days to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate after the House vote. Failure to meet that deadline would allow the Senate to dismiss the articles for non-prosecution.
This seems like a common sense rule. After all, impeachment is an extraordinary measure that needs to move forward quickly. The House Democrats rushed through their impeachment vote without adequate investigation, without allowing any witnesses to defend the President and without even hearing fact witnesses with actual knowledge of the facts. Then, Speaker Pelosi just held the newly passed articles. After the rush, we got the stall from Pelosi.
Hawley says enough is enough when it comes to Pelosi's stalling. If his rule is approved (and it looks like it well could be), Pelosi will have to act fast or see the whole impeachment charade come crashing down on the Democrats' heads.
In the four hours since Hawley announce this measure, 12 senators have already endorsed it. That means it already had one-quarter of the votes needed to pass. It could easily pass if senator McConnell endorses it.
