Ever wonder why Nancy Pelosi held the articles of impeachment for so long? After all, it was an EMERGENCY a true EMERGENCY that required a rushed passage of the articles. Then Pelosi sat on them for five weeks. Now, she's letting them go even though NOTHING has changed.
GOP House leader Kevin McCarthy said today what he thinks is the actual reason for Pelosi holding onto those articles: according to McCarthy, Pelosi was trying to rig the primaries to favot Joe Biden over Bernie Sanders. While that may sound a bit wild, it actually makes great sense. Here's why:
1. Once the impeachment trial starts, it goes day to day until it is finished.
2. Every senator is required by the Senate rules to attend ALL sessions of the trial. Failure to attend actually could lead to the Senate sending out the federal marshals to arrest the missing senator and bring him or her back to DC to attend the proceedings.
3. If the trial starts this coming week, it will run for probably the rest of January.
4. At the end of the month, we have the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary. Normally, candidates would be all over these two states during the last three weeks prior to the vote.
5. Sanders, Warren and Klobuchar are all senators who will have to stop campaigning to sit as "jurors" in the impeachment trial.
6. Biden is not a senator. He can campaign without interruption in Iowa and New Hampshire.
7. By delaying the impeachment trial with her bizarre move to hold onto the articles of impeachment, Pelosi is giving Biden (and the other non-senators) a field free from Sanders, Warren and Klobuchar in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Look, it may sound a bit nutty, but so far it's the explanation for the delay by Pelosi that makes the most sense. Okay, the best excuse is that Pelosi got drunk and put the articles somewhere and couldn't find them again. Other than that one, however, this makes the most sense.
