Newsweek Poll -- More Info
I wrote yesterday about the strange poll the Newsweek had done regarding the upcoming elections. Now, I have had the opportunity to review the internals of the poll, and it is stranger still. The Newsweek sample favor the Democrats on a generic ballot question by 5% if the respondents are limited to registered voters. When the group is expanded to likely voters identified by the poll, the margin shifts to 8% in favor of the Democrats. While it is possible that Newsweek's poll is correct and that the other innumerable recent polls that show the Republicans ahead are wrong, one thing is certain: the Democrats do not do better among likely voters than among registered voters. The reverse has been a constant for the last fifty years at least. Somthing is wrong with the poll results, and someone doing the polling should have realized this and questioned the results.
