A Story That Makes No Sense

For the last ten years, the story line in the media has always been that the USA went to war in Iraq to destroy Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, but that there were no such weapons.  The Democrats mocked president Bush for years over the failure to find the WMD's.  Supposedly, there was no real reason to go to war in Iraq since there were no WMD's.  Remember the "Bush lied, people died" chants?  There was, we were told either a massive failure by the intelligence agencies or just lies coming from the White House.

According to the New York Times today, none of that is true.  The Times published an article about American troops find more than 5000 chemical weapons in Iraq.  Many of the chemical weapons were mustard gas, the weapon of choice during World War I.  Some of the chemical weapons contained Sarin, however, an extremely deadly nerve agent that kills quickly.  Also according to the Times report, quite a number of American troops were exposed to these chemicals and became casualties as a result.  The Time, however, also reports that news of all these chemical weapons was kept secret.  SECRET!!!!

I find this report hard to understand.  If there were 5000 chemical weapons in Iraq, why would the Bush White House keep them secret?  President Bush suffered all sorts of political damage as a result of the supposed non-existence of the WMDs.  Why would their existence be kept from the American people?  I also wonder why it is that the Times is now publicizing the existence of the weapons?  Is it to justify further US involvement to keep the chemical weapons from falling into the hands of ISIS?  We know that ISIS already has part of the stockpile according the Times account.  Indeed, there have been reports that ISIS has used chemical weapons on the Kurds and on Syrian forces in the past, but these were discounted as likely lies.

Someone needs to tell America what the truth is.  Sadly, even were the Obama White House to tell us, there are a great many people who would not believe anything that president Obama would say.  We all know the saying "Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me."  With Obama, we have to add, "Fool me thirty one times, you got to be kidding!"

We are in the last weeks of the campaign, so there will not be any investigations from Congress into this story.  As soon as the elections are over, however, someone needs to get to the bottom of what has happened here.  Among the questions that must be answered are these:

1.  Why was this story kept secret?
2.  Does ISIS indeed have chemical weapons?
3.  Are any of the weapons that could be useful in an attack on an American city in the hands of any terrorist group?
4.  What steps are being taken now to guarantee that the remaining weapons are destroyed?
