Do they Think It Helps?

In the last three weeks, there have been more personnel of the Obama administration appearing on Fox News than during the last year (or at least it seems that way).  Jen Psaki and her assistant Marie Harf were on Megyn Kelly's show.  Jeh Johnson was interviewed on special report.  And there were others, too.  Indeed, it seems to me that roughly a month ago, the White House decided that it would have to send messengers to reach the Fox audience (which is most of the cable news audience) if it was to help stop losses in the mid term elections.

I wonder who made that decision.  Do the folks at the White House really think it helps their cause to send spokesmen onto Fox News who only repeat talking points?  The worst of all was Jen Psaki who was left looking foolish when she was confronted with questions she could not or would not answer.  Secretary Johnson, however, also looked extremely evasive when he "answered" questions with non-responsive statements.  The truth is that anyone who listened to what was being said clearly understood that this was nothing more than stonewalling.

So why did they do this?  Surely, the White House political directors understand that it looks bad to put someone on TV to stonewall in this way.  I have to assume that the reasoning was that the appearances were meant to show others that the Obama White House had not written off a big chunk of the country.  In other words, the appearances were not for those who actually watched, but rather for those who only heard that these appearances had taken place.  That may sound dumb, but it is the only reason I can come up with.  Okay, there is also the possibility that the White House really did not expect the Fox News hosts to ask difficult questions.  Are they really that dense?  Maybe.
