The Turks Do Nothing

The optimism last week that Turkey would use its own forces to prevent ISIS from overrunning the city of Ayn al Arab in Syria has proven to be misplaced.  Even though the city (also known as Kobani) is less than half a mile from the Turkish border and even though the Turkish army has massed more than 100 tanks at the border along with thousands of its troops, the Turks are doing nothing as ISIS forces move forward into Ayn al Arab.  It now seems clear that the Turks are either waiting for ISIS to first destroy the Kurdish forces in the city before taking any action or planning to do nothing.

During World War II, Soviet forces were driving through Poland towards Warsaw and the Germans were in disarray.  When the Red Army got to the outskirts of Warsaw, the Polish resistance started an uprising in the city.  Stalin immediately ordered the Red Army to stop and wait as the Nazis wiped out the resistance fighters during the next week.  Only once the resistance was destroyed did the Red Army resume its move forward pushing the Germans out of Warsaw.  In this way, Stalin took Warsaw but he let the Germans get rid of the resistance.

It seems likely that the Turks are copying this plan.
