The Pyongyang Shuffle

First Kim Jong Un disappears from view.  Now this:  the North Korean delegation to the closing ceremony of the Asian Games in Seoul included Hwang Pyong-so.  Hwang has been the number two guy in the government until now.  He is also a creature of North Korea's Organization and Guidance Department (OGD), the rough equivalent of the old Soviet Central Committee.  While in Seoul, Hwang arranged for a resumption in reunification talks with the South that will begin in November.

So what is really happening?  Has Kim been deposed?  Has he disappeared because he is deceased?  Is this just some sort of ploy to make outsiders think that has happened?  North Korea is nearly impossible to decipher.  Perhaps the intelligence agencies have more insight into the situation, but the rest of us are left guessing.

Particularly since North Korea has nuclear weapons and has been a major exporter of weapons technology, the idea that the country would be moving closer to the South Koreans is a major positive.  Let's hope that is what is actually happening.
