Let's Not Forget

In this election season, it is important not to get caught up in the "horse race" stories in the media which focus on who is ahead and what campaign strategies are being followed.  Those may be interesting for political junkies, but there are much more important criteria on which voters should focus.  Here are just a few:

1.  Did your congressman or senator up for re-election vote for Obamacare?  If so, did they tell falsely tell you that you could keep your policy, keep your doctor and save $2500 per year through the law?  Anyone who understood the content of Obamacare knew that those promises were false.  That means either your congressman or senator lied to you or that he or she didn't bother to understand the law before voting for it.

2.  What has your congressman or senator had to say about the IRS targeting conservatives and Christian groups for mistreatment and harassment?  If your congressman or senator has said that this is a "phony" scandal, can you really vote to re-elect this person?  We know that the targeting is real; we know it actually happened.  It is anything but phony.

3.  What has your congressman or senator done with regard to the scandal at the Veterans Administration medical system?  For years there were non-stop complaints about long waiting times for our veterans to get care.  Did your congressman or representative pay attention to them?

4.  What does your congressman or senator have to say about illegal immigration?  For the last five years, the biggest single factor that has kept unemployment of lower skilled American workers high has been the ever increasing flow of illegals into the country.  Does your representative ever voice concern about how illegal immigration is damaging lower income Americans?

5.  Does your congressman or senator still talk about increased taxation on the rich?  That was the mantra of the Democrats for four years.  In 2010, when the Democrats still had all the votes they needed to change what ever tax rates they wanted, the Democrats chose to keep taxes on the rich unchanged.  They wanted to keep the political issue alive rather than carry out any changes to the tax rates.  Then, two years later, the issue was effectively laid to rest when all permanent tax rates were imposed that increased rates for the highest incomes.  That change has had no positive impact on the well being of the country.

6.  Does your congressman or senator oppose making birth control available over the counter?  For some inexplicable reason, the Democrats don't want to let women buy contraceptives over the counter without a prescription.  Why?

The list could go on and on.  The point, however, is that we need to focus on the issues and not on the nonsense being fed to us by the media.
