Like many others, I read the excerpts of the new book by Leon Panetta and all of his comments about president Obama. They were shocking; no one could deny that. Panetta sets forth an indictment of Obama's ability and desire to be a leader. Panetta describes major blunders in Iraq and elsewhere that he observed first hand as head of the CIA and then as Secretary of Defense. It is appalling.
Tonight, however, I watched Bill O'Reilly interview secretary Panetta at length on Fox News. The interview lasted for half an hour and it was mesmerizing. Panetta clearly wanted to say nice things about Obama but he also clearly wanted to tell the truth as he saw it. That resulted in a spectacle that one never gets to see on American TV. Here was a well respected and very high ranking member of the president's own party who told the country from his own first hand knowledge about major, major failures of that president. After decades as a litigator, I have seen a great many people answer questions. This was truly amazing.
I have heard some speculate that Panetta is just saying these things to try to somehow separate Hillary Clinton from Obama and to put all the blame for the failures on Obama. I don't think so. Either Panetta was trying to tell the truth to the country, or Mr. Panetta is one of the greatest actors of our time. Panetta was not pulling a political maneuver; this was real. That is why it was such riveting TV.
It is too bad that only five million or so viewers will see the interview. It ought to be required viewing for all Americans. If you have not seen the interview, it will likely be posted on O'Reilly's website or on the Fox News site. WATCH IT!!!
