Almost no one watches MSNBC anymore. The network now gets even lower ratings than CNN; soon it may sink below Al Jazeera America. Nevertheless, it is worth checking in with the lefties at MSNBC on occasion just to see how the heart of liberalism sees the world. Tonight, I watched a segment on Rachel Maddow's show. It seems that Rachel is outraged that the US Air Force is using helicopter gunships in some of the sorties in Iraq against ISIS. Maddow said that president Obama told us that there would be no Americans in combat in this fight, but helicopters fly low and slow and present appealing targets for ISIS antiaircraft weapons. Soon, the Americans in the helicopters may get shot down. Not only could that lead to death and injury, but it would mean that ground forces might be sent to try to recover the downed pilots. At that point there would be (gasp!!!) American troops on the ground in Iraq.
The vast majority of Americans who pay any attention at all to Iraq, Syria and the fight against ISIS are presently concerned that the paltry amount of air power America has deployed is proving ineffective against ISIS. We have too few sorties. We have too few nearby bases from which to operate. We have inadequate intelligence on the ground to provide the air force with a full range of targets. Indeed, we and the ground forces we are supporting appear to still be losing territory to ISIS. For Rachel Maddow and the left, however, that is NOT the real concern. No, they think the real concern is whether or not America has boots on the ground. They don't care about victory over ISIS, they just focus on the means that gets used in whatever half-assed fight we put up to try to stop ISIS.
When one hears commentary like that offered by Maddow, it is not hard to understand why president Obama cannot seem to decide on a coherent strategy for winning against ISIS. Obama, like his political soul mates, is focused on whether or not America will again send troops into battle in the region. He still does not understand that once we commit to the goal of destroying ISIS, we have to take the steps required to accomplish that end. It is a secret that both Obama and Maddow seem incapable of understanding. Let's hope that they wake up to reality soon.
