The shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport raises a major question: the shooter (who is in custody) is said to have contacted the FBI in Alaska early in 2016 to report that he was being forced by the government to watch ISIS videos. The guy was so clearly mentally ill, that the FBI contacted local authorities to have them take him in for observation regarding his mental condition. In other words, we have a man who both the federal and state authorities knew to be mentally unstable and most likely psychotic. So why was that man allowed to have a gun? Under current law, someone who is mentally ill can be denied gun ownership. Why did this guy fall through the cracks in the system? Why wasn't the law enforced?
Indeed, if you have been wondering why there haven't been all the usual gun control points being made in the media regarding this attack, the question above is the actually the answer. No change in the law is needed to have stopped this attack; proper enforcement would have sufficed.
