More Than Murphy

Earlier today, I wrote about the dishonesty of Connecticut senator Chris Murphy with regard to the testimony of the nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.  I see now that Murphy is not alone in that mess.  My local newspaper, a Hearst publication, is running an article under a headline that screams that Trump's Ed Nominee Says Teachers May Need Guns.

Let's stop there.  What does that headline mean to you?  I mean what kind of a person advocates arming teachers?  And that's the point of the headline; it is meant to make DeVos look crazy.  But, of course, the headline is completely untrue.  The article itself is a reprint of one from the San Francisco Chronicle.  The Chronicle headline says that DeVos testified that teachers may need guns to protect students from grizzly bears.  So it's another of those headlines to make DeVos look crazy.

Here's what actually happened.  DeVos was asked about having guns in schools and said that those questions were best left to local and state authorities.  Senator Enzi of Wyoming mentioned a school in his state near Yellowstone where a large fence had been built to protect the students from nearby wildlife like bears.  DeVos illustrated her statement why localities should decide on having guns at schools or not by mentioning that she assumes that at the school in Wyoming to which Senator Enzi had referred, there is likely a gun or guns inside to protect students should any of the wildlife get past the fence.

To say the least, this is hardly advocating the general arming of teachers.  It is hardly claiming that most schools have to worry about bears.  It is nothing more than a rational discussion of why one policy made in Washington for all the nation's schools will not function as well as policies made to deal with local conditions.

It is articles/headlines like these which make most Americans realize just how untrustworthy the media and many politicians really are.
