Today's story for the Trump transition as far as the mainstream media is concerned is that Monica Crowley is no longer going to be part of the new president's national security team. She decided not to take the position after CNN published an article accusing Crowley of copying some paragraphs in her 2012 book "What the Bleep Just Happened" from other works. What a scandal! (or so the media tells us.)
Now let's put this in perspective. Crowley is a radio and TV commentator who was going to be a spokesperson for the national security team. She was not going to be in charge of national security or doing anything other than dealing with the media. She was hardly central to the Trump national security apparatus.
I don't know if Crowley plagiarized any sections of her book four years ago. Truly, it is not important. If there is a swirl of supposed scandal around her, however, it is probably best that she bowed out. The President Elect doesn't need to have question over his people. Remember, though, that there are always questions like these about some of the people who get nominated. When president Obama was coming into office in 2009, some of his picks for important positions like the Secretary of the Treasury had somehow failed to pay taxes. That pick, Tim Geithner, was approved by the Senate anyway. Others, like former senator Tom Daschle had similar problems that led him to withdraw his nomination as Secretary of HHS. Compared to those guys, Crowley's problems are small potatoes.
