Donald Trump named his son-in-law Jared Kushner as a White House advisor today. The mainstream anti-Trump media had the predictable reaction. Chris Matthews called Kusher the "Uday Hussein" of the administration. The condemnation for naming a family member as an advisor is coming from all the usual suspects on the left. Of course, it is nothing but political BS. Indeed, likening Kushner who is by all accounts a brilliant and talented man to the power mad son of Saddam Hussein is going overboard even for someone like Matthews who knows no limit to his anti-Trump rants.
It's worth remembering that John Kennedy appointed his brother Robert as Attorney General. Bill Clinton had his wife, old what's-her-name, run his effort to pass a national healthcare bill. It was even called "Hillarycare" because of her involvement. It's not something new for a president to have a family member assist or serve in his administration.
Beyond that, however, it's worth remembering the point of the anti-nepotism rules of the federal government specifically exempt the president from coverage. According to news reports, Kushner's lawyer Jamie Gorelick provided that opinion. For those who don't know Jamie, she was a stalwart Clintonista during Bill's administration, so this is no partisan position. Forgetting her opinion, however, the law is quite clear on the point.
This whole brouhaha is going to be short lived.
