It's a tale of two congressmen. One, Joe Wilson, is a Republican. The other, John Lewis, is a Democrat. Both had high profile statements to make about the president.
At the State of the Union Address some years ago, president Obama was talking about whether Obamacare would cover illegal aliens. Obama assured the nation that the new Obamacare program would not cover illegals. Wilson, in the audience for the speech, shouted "You lie!" As it turned out, Wilson was right, since in many states illegals get Obamacare coverage through Medicaid. Nevertheless, the media and the liberal machine went into overdrive and spent days criticizing Wilson for daring to say such a thing to the president. It was just soooo disrespectful, and for the left it threatened the American way of life.
Lewis, on the other hand, refused to attend the inauguration of a new president. He said that the president had not been "legitimately elected." There was no criticism from the media. Apparently, it only matters when a Republican like Wilson says negative things about a Democrat president. Lewis made his statement in 2001 when George W. Bush was being sworn in. That's right, sixteen years ago, Lewis boycotted the inauguration and denounced Bush as illegitimate.
Now Lewis is back trying again. This time he's boycotting the inauguration of Donald Trump. He's still using the line that the president was not legitimately elected. The media is making a big deal about it. Why is it a big deal the second time around? The truth is that it isn't a big deal. The American people don't care about it. Only the mainstream media cares.
We just finished an election cycle that showed that the American people really don't pay attention to the views expressed by much of the mainstream media. If they did, it would president Hillary Clinton taking the oath of office on Friday. The American people have had enough of manufactured controversy and fake news. Somehow, though, the media still has not grasped that reality.
I do wonder what the coverage will be like when Lewis boycotts the inauguration of president Pence in 2024.
