In the last two days, there have been a series of events that have shown the remarkable power of honesty. In each case, the people involved have just told the simple truth rather than embellishing everything in a patina of politically correct rhetoric that has been the political norm for so long.
The first of these moments came yesterday in the confirmation hearing of Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General. Senator Feinstein of California asked Sessions about his previously stated view that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. This could have been a political minefield if Sessions had followed the old formula. In previous years, he might have been advised to walk back his opposition to Roe in order to avoid angering pro-choice senators. We might have heard some sort of gobbledygook that satisfied no one. Instead, Sessions repeated his view that the Roe case was wrongly decided. Then he added that it was the decision of the Supreme Court, so it is the law of the land. That honest answer just shut off all further questions on the point.
Another moment came at today's news conference by Donald Trump, the President Elect. After Buzzfeed and CNN publicized a false story about supposed misbehavior by Trump and others and about the Russians having knowledge of this supposed misbehavior, Trump responded by calling the story by its proper name, "fake news". Trump then went on to refuse to call on the CNN reporter at the press conference pointing out that he represented a fake news outlet. The President Elect also called the story "crap". Now I'm sure that there were political consultants across Washington who passed out at Trump's direct and harsh response. They would have wanted Trump to be "presidential" which would mean saying that the story was inaccurate but not taking on the purveyors of this BS. Trump went instead for all out honesty. I'm sure that there were people all across America who were really thrilled to see the media morons who just went with fake news get their just humiliation for doing that.
Still a third moment came at Rex Tillerson's confirmation hearing today. The nominee for Secretary of State was asked about his supposed "cozy" relationship with Russia. Tillerson did not doubletalk or conceal anything. He went with the honest truth. Again, it almost shut down the hearing. It seems that the Democrats could not remember what to do when faced with truth.
Let's hope this is the start of eight years of honesty in Washington.
