New York's governor Andrew Cuomo has let misguided environmental nonsense triumph over what is good for the state and its people. It's astounding to watch.
Yesterday Cuomo announced an agreement to shut the Indian Point nuclear plant north of New York City. That plant supplies a major chunk of the electricity needs of New Yorkers who live in the metropolitan area. The plant was built decades ago, but it continues to function well. It supplies low cost electricity. It gives off no emissions. Here's the problem for Cuomo, however: he's worried that if there were a problem at the plant, it would be difficult to evacuate the people who live nearby. That means that after something like 50 years of good performance, Cuomo is worried that there will be a meltdown requiring a mass evacuation. Such an evacuation has never been required at the site of any American nuclear plant. Only at the Russian built Chernobyl reactor and at the Japanese reactor hit by an earthquake followed by a tsunami have such evacuations ever been needed. One was likely shoddy construction and the other a perfect storm of natural occurrences that could not hit Indian Point. In the fevered minds of environmentalists on the left, however, nuclear power is bad, so Indian Point has to go.
The result of closing Indian Point is that there will be a big upsurge in emissions into the air as new power plants come on line. There will also be massive increases in electric bills for New Yorkers; it will be something on the order of $100 for the average homeowner and much, much more for businesses. One has to wonder how many more jobs will leave New York or never be created due to the higher power costs.
A few years back, Cuomo banned fracking in New York. A big chunk of the state has a major natural gas field under it which can produce fuel if fracking is used. Cuomo said no because fracking is "dangerous", another of those idiotic leftist environmentalist lies. The wealth that could have been tapped for millions of New Yorkers, the thousands of jobs that would have been created and the lower power prices resulting from locally produced natural gas were all prevented by this move by Cuomo. Here the key is that in the neighboring state of Pennsylvania, fracking has resulted in a major economic benefit which New York missed.
Cuomo really does not seem to care what happens to New York so long as he remains true to the leftist orthodoxy.

France is totally powered by Nuclear Power designed and built by our American Company
Bechtel Engineers and Construction.
Maybe Andrew is still in the 19th Century?
