Since I just wrote about Germany, I thought it appropriate to add some comments about Japan. After all, today is the 72nd anniversary of the Japanese surrender that ended World War II. The representatives of the Japanese government signed the articles of surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo harbor, and the deadliest war in the history of humanity was over.
It's important to remember how drastically the relationship between the USA and Japan changed after the war ended. The Japanese went from being reviled enemies to become close friends. Most citizens of one of these countries wish the other well. Japan recovered from the war to become a major world economic power and a key part of the international order.
We should remember today all those who gave their lives in the Pacific in World War II. Their sacrifice not only preserved the USA but it made the world a better place.
