The Trump Deal on the Debt Limit, Hurricane Relief and Government Funding

The House voted this morning on the package to provide waive the debt ceiling, provide hurricane relief and fund the government for three months.  No surprise; it passed overwhelmingly.  The only votes against it came in the form of free shots taken by GOP members who wanted to keep their positions opposed to raising the debt limit without offsets.

I'm not surprised, but I must say I am disappointed by the response I've seen to this deal made by the President with the Democrat leadership.  In one move, Trump got rid of a month's worth of bickering on should we/shouldn't we raise the debt ceiling.  He got the cash needed NOW for Harvey relief (with more to follow) and he got the usual nonsense about a government shut down off the table.  Since the deal goes for three months, it didn't get the GOP congressional leadership the delay until after the 2018 election that they wanted, but they were never going to get that anyway.  After all, since the GOP caucus in the House would not have easily passed a debt ceiling waiver, there really was no choice.  Rather than doing the usual drag it out nonsense, Trump just got it all over with.

And what has Trump gained?  First of all, September is now open again to let Congress move forward with tax reform instead of the kabuki theater of government funding that was likely to have taken place.  That means that the President greatly improved his chances of getting the tax bill through this year.

Second, Trump worked closely with the Democrats' leaders.  That may not seem like much, but just think of the reaction senator Feinstein got the other day when she said that Trump could be a good president.  She was threatened with a primary opponent for daring to speak nicely of the President.  What will these same far left Dems have to say now that Schumer and Pelosi are working with him?

Third, Trump made clear to the GOP members of Congress that he won't stand by and wait for them to come together if he needs something to be accomplished.  Some of those GOP members who think they can hold both Congress and the President hostage with their votes just got a rather rude wake up call.  They now know that if they don't compromise and cooperate, they might see another Trump/Democrat deal that they will hate rather than just being disappointed with a GOP passed bill.

Fourth, Trump cut through the Washington BS to move things forward.  The politicians and pundits may talk about it, but to the average voter it is a good change from the past nonsense and gridlock.
