Fast Action By SCOTUS Puts the Trump's EO Back In Effect

The Executive Order of President Trump which limited the entry into the USA by people from certain countries in the Middle East was put back in place fully by the Supreme Court today.  The order deals with a 90 day ban on entry by these people and it went into effect in late June after an earlier Supreme Court ruling.  The order also bars entry of certain refugees seeking asylum in the USA for 180 days.  Last week, the Ninth Circuit issued an order widening the categories of people who could not be excluded under the Executive Order and ending the ban on refugees.  The administration asked the Supreme Court to stop that Ninth Circuit order with regard to the refugees.  Given that there are only about two weeks left on the 90 day general ban on entry from certain countries, it is not surprising that they did not ask SCOTUS to revisit the section of the Ninth Circuit ruling that dealt with that subject.  Today, SCOTUS issued a stay which stopped enforcement of the Ninth Circuit ruling.

Putting all this into simpler and less legalistic language, what SCOTUS did was to keep the refugee limitations in place as requested by President Trump.  This is a preliminary move, and there will eventually be a further decision, but for now the order stands.

There is an argument in the Supreme Court scheduled for early October for the entire matter.  I assume that since the main portion of the travel limitations will have expired by that time, that the Supreme Court will rule only on the refugee section.  The rest is moot.
