Hurricane Harvey created monstrous problems in Texas. For the media, though, that was so last week. Now, the focus seems to be on Hurricane Irma, a huge storm just starting to hit some of the islands in the Caribbean. Every few hours there is an update on the storm's location and course. Irma will hit the Virgin Islands and skirt just offshore by Puerto Rico. Then it will move along the north coast of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It is then likely to move up the coast of Cuba, although it may actually come ashore there. Ultimately, Irma is predicted to turn a bit more towards the north and either hit the southern tip of Florida or move up one coast of that state or the other. Everyone is getting ready. In Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties in Florida, the schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, long before Irma even gets close. This is supposed to allow people to make preparations for the storm, although I wonder how having all those children home from school will make that easier. I suppose that if an evacuation is ordered, at least the kids will be home to start.
Tomorrow, Congress is supposed to vote on the first aid package for Texas and the Harvey victims. Hopefully, the media will find the time to tell us the result of that vote.
Let's hope that nothing the media finds really important happens in the next few days. Just imagine if Beyoncé filed for divorce; no one would know anything about either hurricane.
