Let's Be Clear About DACA

The news tonight says that President Trump is about to end DACA with a delay in enforcement to for a number of months.  Even before the announcement, we have gotten the usual responses.  The media and the Democrats are denouncing this as a racist move taken just because of anti-Hispanic hatred.  That's bogus.  In fact, it's not even close to the truth.  The President campaigned for enforcement of America's existing immigration laws, and that is what ending DACA does.  After all, when president Obama announced DACA, he did not bother to ask Congress to enact it into law.  Instead, Obama just signed it into being by executive action.  By doing so, Obama did not actually change the law.  In fact, DACA would likely be determined to be unconstitutional if the case ever reached the Supreme Court.

But here's the truth of the situation:  President Trump is ending DACA, but that still does not mean that the DACA people are about to be deported.  The focus of immigration enforcement remains on illegal aliens with criminal records or violent behavior like gang membership.  It is going to be a while before all of the criminals get tossed out of the country.  None of the DACA people are likely to be targeted for deportation.
