Just like the oil in the Gulf, the news is leaking out that Barack Obama got more campaign contributions from BP sources than any other politician during the last 20 years. So what! The issue in the Gulf is stopping the flow of oil into the water and cleaning up the mess that is already there. Campaign contributions will not affect that problem. What we need now is a competent effort by the federal government, the platform owner and BP. There is a federal contingency plan for dealing with an oil release of this sort. It involves accumulating the oil and then burning it while it remains at sea. This emergency plan has still not been put into effect by the feds even though we are now approaching two weeks since the disaster. All we get from the White House is words. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is quite good at assigning blame for the disaster, but he never has explained why the federal disaster plan has not been put into effect. Indeed, the media has not even asked him (as far as I can find out).
It is time for the people of the USA to call Washington and demand that someone competent be put in charge of the oil capping and recovery effort. We also need to demand that Obama do something other than give a speech or do a photo op. Right now, we need leadership on this issue and that means getting the job done. There will be plenty of time to argue about who is to blame.
