The controversy over whether a mosque and Muslim community center should be built on the edge of Ground Zero in New York City has a new participant: President Obama. Tonight the president came out in strong support of the construction. for me, this is just another example of Obama being tone deaf to the wishes of the American people. The issue is not religious freedom as Obama would style it. The true issue is honor and respect. One does not put a monument to the philosphy that drove this evil act at the site where 3000 people died. But in Obama's world, the world of the American left, the most important question is always this: "who is the victim here?" Indeed, if the victim can also be a racial victim as well, then so much the better. If a man kills 9 people in hartford after getting caught stealing and getting fired, then we are made to hear how he was the victim of racism (as if this somehow justifies his acts of murder.) If a Muslim army officer kills 13 soldiers in cold blood, an act that he planned after long exchanges with a radical, terrorist supporting imam in the Middle East, we again are told how the poor killer was a victim of discrimination. When Professor Gates flies off the handle at Cambridge policemen who are investigating a break in, Obama knows that the police did something stupid without even hearing the facts since it is obvious since the policeman is white and the poor victim, professor Gates, is black.
The sad truth is that Obama and the left see the whole world this way. They always find victims and the victims are always good. That is why the Palestinians who shot rockets into Israel are to be admired but when the Israelis shoot back it is a war crime. That is why nothing is said of the oppression of gays or women by the Taliban or the mullahs in Iran, but if the people of California vote to keep marriage between people of opposite sexes it is a cause celebre that cannot be allowed to stand. Just imagine! Dr. Laura Schlesinger said the word "nigger' on the radio. She has to be thrown off the air. Of course, if the arab government of Sudan kills tens of thousands of black Christians in the south of that country, we never hear a peep from any of those who protest about Dr. Laura.
I am not writing in support of racism or sectarianism. I, like Rodney King, just want everyone to get along. I will not let another day go by, however, listening to the false claims of victimhood for murderers, terrorists and the like without saying that this is nothing but hooey. Indeed, the idea that the President of the United States could call for construction of a mosque at ground zero is not intelligent, rational, or even decent. It is the subjugation of propriety to the false ideology of victimization.
People, it is time to remember that no one need be a victim. As our founders knew, each person has the ability to bring about his own destiny. We can paint our own future; it is not written for us by others. Neither race nor creed determine who we are or what we may do. We determine that for ourselves. We each must have the decency to honor those who died on 9-11. We each must have the courage to do what is right without fear of those whose profession seems to be nothing more than proclaiming the latest victim who must be supported.
