Push back based upon speculation

The big time push back regarding Michelle Obama's opulent trip has begun circulating in the media. I have now seen seven stories all citing to a column written by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times which claim that the trip took place because the First lady wanted to spend time with a friend whose father had passed away. In addition, it is "speculated" that the Versailles-like hotel was actually booked by the secret service since it would be easier to guard.

While this may all sound nice, the truth is that the White House has not said either of these things. It would be easy enough for the White House to explain the reason for Michelle's trip, but it has chosen not to do so. Instead, the media is just writing stories about what some reporter for a local paper said and treating that story as the gospel. I hate to break it to these folks, but the White House would surely have released the reason for the trip were it so benign.

The booking of the palatial hotel rooms admittedly has no basis in fact. Even the stories call it speculation.

The real question is this: Is there any limit to how far the media will go to protect Obama from his arrogance and incompetence?
