And Now for something completely the Same

There is a sad news item out of the Middle East this morning. Here are the first few lines:

"Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Naji al-Otari dismissed the chances of peace ever being achieved in the Middle East in an interview with Syrian media.

"The conflict with Israel will always exist," said Otri in a report cited by the online website of Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar on Friday"

this report from the Jerusalem Post is not surprising. It does illustrate why there is little chance of success for the proposed talks sponsored by the US. If a country like Syria is siting on the sidelines rooting for war, there is little reason to believe that the Palestinians will ever get to the point where they will move towards peace. The Palestinian leadership (yes, I know that is an oxymoron) will never take a step that puts it at odds with the Syrians; they know that such a move would cause the Syrians to conduct one of their assassination campaigns.
