Why Can The Israelis Do It But the USA Cannot

The news today reports that a shipment of advanced anti-ship missiles delivered to the Assad forces in Syria by the Russians were destroyed in an attack last week in an area near the port city of Latakia.  The missiles were said to be Russian Yakhont models that could have been used to attack ships out at sea or oil/gas drilling platforms in the Mediterranean.  According to reports, the warehouses that were hit were totally destroyed by giant blasts.

Syrian rebels report that they had found the missiles, but they also said that they were not the ones who destroyed the missiles.  Israel, as is its policy, will not confirm or deny that it carried out the attack, but there are no other likely choices for the attacking party.

What this means is that Israel has once again attacked Syrian positions with impunity.  There were no Israeli losses, and the Assad forces were beaten so badly that they did not even publicize the attack.  These missiles were of the sort that Israel had said would cross a red line for it, so the Israelis took the missiles out.

Nearly a year ago, president Obama told Syrian forces that the use of chemical weapons would cross a red line for America.  It been confirmed that the Assad forces used chemical weapons more than once over the last six months.  Unlike the Israelis, however, American forces have done nothing.  the Obamacrats have told us that the Syrian air defenses are very strong, so an air attack on chemical weapon storage sites would not make sense.  These are the same defenses which the Israelis have now penetrated four times in the last two months with no losses and no apparent opposition.  In other words, what Obama and the Obamacrats are saying is just another lie to mislead America.

I make no value judgment on the attack by the Israelis.  They have to defend themselves as they see fit.  I only point it out because the Israeli action shows that a nation can actually set red lines and then ENFORCE those red lines.  Assad and his friends know now, however, that they need not listen to anything that Obama has to say.
