The Islamic terrorist who shot up the Orlando club last night was Omar Mateen. He was born in America from a family that came from Afghanistan. He was a Moslem. He told police that he pledged loyalty to ISIS. He was waging jihad. Not only was he killing all sorts of innocent people but he also was wearing an explosive suicide vest. He planned ahead for this attack. His weapons were legally obtained. He had permits for all of them. Mateen went through all the background checks and met all other requirements imposed by the government for gun ownership.
So why did he do it? That was the first question that was asked once Mateen's identity was determined. Mateen's father said that his son was angry because he had seen two gay men kissing two or three weeks ago. In other words, Mateen's father said his son's attack was a hate crime against gays and not Islamic terrorism. That was a shocking excuse; few parents would blame their child for a heinous hate crime. Nevertheless, it has now been exposed as completely untrue.
The Washington Post is reporting that Mateen's father has a TV show which he broadcasts on a cable network out of California. The show is in Dari, one of the languages of Afghanistan. On the show, Seddique Mateen announces his support and admiration for the Taliban. He also calls for the arrest of the current and former president of Afghanistan as well as many other prominent anti-Taliban leaders.
Right now, there are American forces in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban. That means that Seddique Mateen has been living in the USA promoting support for America's battlefield enemy. During other wars, Americans who promoted support for our enemies were taken off the air and imprisoned. It's called treason. In the age of Obama, however, we don't even bother to stop people promoting our enemies from inside the USA.
Is there any doubt where Omar Mateen learned his support for Islamic terrorism that motivated his killing spree last night? If the Washington Post report is accurate (and it appears to be so), Seddique Mateen should be arrested immediately. Those who help broadcast his garbage should also be arrested. The cable tv station they used should be shut down.
This is not a free speech issue. It has never been the right of an American to speak freely in support of our enemies in time of war. That has not changed even with Obama or Hillary Clinton in the White House.
