Hillary Clinton gave an interview to Savannah Guthrie of NBC today. Hillary spent most of the eight minute interview talking about the Orlando massacre and she spoke principally about gun control. I'm not kidding. For Hillary, the key take away from Orlando is the need for more gun control. Hillary spoke for about a quarter of the interview on the plan to bar sales of guns to people on the federal "no fly" list. She blamed the GOP controlled Congress for not passing such a measure. She also called again for renewal of the ban on so-called "assault weapons".
Let's consider how well Hillary Clinton's response to Orlando plays; does it make sense? Omar Mateen, the Orlando shooter, was NOT on the federal no-fly list. He used multiple weapons at the club in Orlando where the massacre took place. One would have qualified as an assault weapon under the old federal ban; the others would not. Mateen got all his weapons legally; he had permits for them. So put all that together and you find that the items that Hillary is pushing would not have made any difference in Orlando. Mateen might have been forced to use more pistols or a different type of rifle, but the attack could still have proceeded unhindered. So Hillary chose the politically safe path of talking about a meaningless issue: gun control. She offered nothing that could change the trajectory of increasing radical Islamic terrorism here in the USA.
Donald Trump also spoke today about Orlando. Trump's message was that America has to speak openly and honestly about just what radical Islam consists of. He also spoke about resisting the message of that group. Here's a key part of what he said:
I refuse to allow America to become a place where gay people, Christian people, Jewish people, are targets of intimidation and persecution by radical Islamic preachers of hate and violence.
This is not just a national security issue. It is a quality of life issue.
It we want to protect the quality of life for all Americans -- women, children, gay and straight, jews and christians, then we need to tell the truth about radical islam and we need to do it now.
The truth is that Trump took on one of the central tenets of liberalism; he called out one of the liberals' favorite group of "victims" for pushing hatred of others. What he said was clearly not politically correct. You can be certain that Trump will be condemned by the whole variety of leftist/liberal pundits and politicians for attacking Islam (even though he didn't). But most Americans will recognize Trump's words for the common sense that has been missing from Washington for too long. We have a group around the world that wants to kill us all and destroy our way of life. Talking about that fact is not mean spirited or hatred. Telling the truth about this slice of Islam is just a matter of survival. And that survival is not just for America and the West; it is also a matter of survival for the non-radical Moslems who make up the vast majority of Islam. It's time to call out radical Islam for the terrible cancer that it is.
