A Meaningless Exercise -- The NY Democrat Primary for Governor

I live in Connecticut, but in Fairfield County close to New York City.  As a result, my TV and radio is filled with ads for the NY elections.  In fact, there are more ads for NY than for CT at the moment.  That's because tomorrow is the primary in NY.  The biggest race is in the Democrat primary for governor.  The current governor, Andrew Cuomo, is running against Cynthia Nixon.  Cuomo was blessed by having a father who was governor for a few terms until voters rejected him.  Mario Cuomo was a skilled orator but often had problems making up his mind.  Andrew is not a skilled orator.  When he speaks it sounds like someone doing a poor imitation of an outer borough New York City accent.  His problem, though, is not his accent, but rather the content of what he says.  The guy is vapid.  He speaks in slogans but seems to act mostly to do things that help him rather than the people of the state.  His current ads discuss the big points of his campaign:  1.  He is fighting against Trump!  Of course, it's hard to see how a governor has much, if any, impact on what happens in Washington.  2.  He protects a woman's right to choose.  Again, I thought that was decided in 1973 by Roe v. Wade.  Unless SCOTUS changes that ruling, the NY governor has nothing to say about the issue.  3.  He wants to "protect" "immigrant" rights.  That's Cuomo's focus group tested wording for supporting sanctuary cities and giving free stuff to illegal aliens.

It's interesting that Cuomo says nothing about corruption.  While he has been governor, countless politicians and staffers very close to the governor have been indicted and convicted for criminal corruption.  Cuomo claims to have no involvement, but somehow those claims seem unbelievable.  Since his opponent has not really pushed the corruption point, Cuomo has managed to avoid having to deal with it much.

For her part, Cynthia Nixon has little going for her other than that she was Miranda on Sex and the City.  I didn't like her on that show, and she's no better as a candidate.  She too is fighting Trump, protecting abortion rights and helping illegals.  She is all for abolishing ICE.  Her problem is that she is an actress and seems at a loss when she gets a question for which she doesn't have lines that were written for her to deliver.

These are two really poor choices.  One thing is good about this.  Cuomo is likely to win the primary and then the general election.  That will mean no positive change in NY.  If Connecticut can elect Bob Stefanowski in November and cut taxes in a major way, the state will be able to attract people to move here from New York.  It will be great for our economy.
