Yesterday, the government reported the weekly number of new claims for unemployment benefits. It was the lowest number since 1969, continuing the downward trend in this figure. It may seem amazing that the fewest number of people filed for unemployment benefits since 50 years ago, but it's even better than that. In 1969, there were only about 205 million people in the USA. Today, there are at least 50% more. That means that just to equal the rate of 1969, layoffs would be able to be roughly 50% higher. Yesterday's announced number is actually about 35% lower than the 1969 number once adjusted for the number of people in the labor force.
