Former president Obama is out on the campaign trail in California. By now, I'm sure you've seen a bit of his speech as he slams President Trump and the Republicans. It's all over the media. "Barack is back!" seems to be the media mantra of the moment. But did you notice the crowd? Obama spoke yesterday in Anaheim in a district in which there is a hotly contested race for Congress. You would think that in California, Obama would have drawn a big crowd. After all, he is probably the biggest celebrity politician the Democrats have. The problem, however, is that he drew a crowd of only just about 700. Think about that. If the Dems candidate for Congress held a rally with some other high Democrat officials (say governor Brown or senator Kamala Harris), there would surely have been at least 500 people there. The party would have arranged for the crowd (even if they had to hire people to show up.) Obama spoke and despite the fanfare in the media, hardly anyone showed up.
Contrast this to the Trump rally in Montana the other day. He drew a crowd of something like 12,000 and there were thousands more outside who couldn't get into the packed arena. Why the difference?
Let me suggest this answer. Obama is one of the main reasons that people elected Trump in 2016. People grew tired of the flowery oratory saying nothing, of the fight against the ever-present straw men, of the holier than thou attitude. The people opted for someone who, although he doesn't speak as grandly as Obama, says what he actually thinks and talks about actual solutions. Indeed, Trump not only talks about thing, unlike Obama, Trump does them too.
We are no doubt going to see wall to wall coverage of Obama's latest try at fooling people into thinking that he has something positive and relevant to say. It's a media avalanche right now. It will surely continue. It's good to know, however, that no matter what the media pushes, the American people can see through the Obama oratory; it's all sound and fury signifying nothing.
