John Kyl was appointed today to fill the rest of the term of the late senator McCain of Arizona. Kyl held the other senate seat from Arizona for 18 years and then retired. He has made clear that he will retire again at the end of this new term in 2020. Kyl was a good senator, and he will be a welcome addition to the Senate. I just find it sad that the governor of Arizona chose to name a caretaker senator rather than one who could run for re-election in 2020 with the major advantage of being the incumbent. It's a lost opportunity.
