Eugene Robinson

I always like reading columns by Eugene robinson in the Washington Post. It is like taking a vacation in a bizarre country where nothing like our actual reality exists. Today is no exception: Robinson's thesis is that Charlie Rangel is not a crook. We get told that the charges against him range from the technical to the trivial. Of course, even robinson then acknowledges that Rangel did cheat on his taxes by not declaring as income the rental received on property owned in the Dominican Republic. Then it gets funnier. Robinson says this does not matter since the property is not really a villa and since Rangel has now paid taxes, interest and penalties on the income he omitted.

What a joke! Rangel only paid the taxes once he got caught. Under Robinson's logic, a bank robber who steals $25,000 from a local branch is not really a robber if he gives the money back once he gets caught. This would start a wonderful new trend which could greatly reduce the cost of running the court system. Each criminal caught could just give the money back. It would be harder for murderers, but I assume it would be enough for Robinson if they just said they were sorry.

the truth is that Rangel is a crook and Robinson is an idiot.
