There's a lot of news coverage tonight about Hillary Clinton finally getting enough votes to gain the Democrat nomination for president.
It's strange. Last fall, Hillary was running against four other candidates: a crabby geriatric socialist from a tiny state, the former governor of Maryland who looked like a car insurance salesman, a former Republican whose career was the result of his father's accomplishments, and a former Virginia senator who was totally out of step with the rest of the party. It looked like Hillary would just walk to the nomination without any meaningful struggles. Instead, we are now at the last day of primary season and Hillary just made it to 50% of the delegates. It's the rough equivalent of the New England Patriots playing a local high school team and having to go into overtime to win.
In many respects, the delay in Hillary's winning is tangible proof of just how much most Americans don't like her. Indeed, it seems that the only way Hillary can win the White House is to keep voters focused on Donald Trump. If the election is seen as a yes/no choice on Trump, she has a chance. By the same token, if Trump can make this a yes/no choice on Hillary, then Trump will win easily.
