Doug Schoen is a long time confidant of the Clintons. He was a key political adviser for Bill Clinton during his presidency. He was also a key supporter of Hillary Clinton in 2008. This year, Schoen has not been directly involved, but he is a consistent purveyor of the Clinton view in his periodic TV appearances. That makes his column in the Wall Street Journal today something of a bombshell. Schoen is now saying that Hillary may not be the Democrats' nominee this year. He points out that her candidacy is losing support across California and that she may lose that state to Sanders, something that could upset the superdelegates enough that they drop her. He also points to the surging strength of Sanders who may turn the convention into chaos particularly since both Clinton and the DNC are backing away from confrontation with him. Finally, he mentions the overhang of the FBI investigation. Schoen does not think that Sanders would emerge as the nominee, though. No, his pick is Joe Biden who parachutes into the nomination at the last minute in a move engineered by the White House.
This is more than just another column in a newspaper. It's the rough equivalent of Valerie Jarrett writing about the failed Obama presidency. It's a shot at Hillary's prospects by someone who is clearly identified with her and her prospects. In other words, it's serious. It's going to be interesting to watch the reaction.
