I was struck today by some of the more ridiculous stories in the media in connection with the terrorist attack in Tel Aviv the other day. Here are three:
1. The mayor of Tel Aviv (who comes from the far, far left of Israeli politics) said that the terrorist attack was the result of Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.
2. The delegates appointed by Bernie Sanders to the Democrat platform committee called for the need to renounce the Israeli occupation in view of the terror attack.
3. The Democrats attacked Donald Trump because he has not denounced some people on Twitter who support him but also say anti-Semitic things.
All three of these stories repeat the talking point of the left on Israel. The Israelis are occupying Palestinian land without any right and that is the reason for the Palestinian/Israeli failure to make peace. That talking point deserves some consideration.
Consider this: the left knows for certain that it is the Israeli "occupation" that cause Palestinian terrorism. For me it is amazing that they can be so certain about the cause when they seem to have no idea what causes other Islamic terrorist attacks. If it is occupation that causes terror, why are the ISIS terrorists attacking Brussels? The Belgians haven't occupied anything in a long, long time. They are just another small European country without much presence outside their small nation. The same is true of Norway. The Norwegians have not occupied anyone else's lands since the days of the Vikings. I don't think that the terrorism directed against the people in Norway had anything to do with what the Vikings did a millennium ago.
Consider this: before Israel took control of these "occupied" lands in 1967, the very same territory was "occupied" by Jordan and Egypt. Egyptian military forces controlled the Gaza strip, but there was no terrorist attacks there. Jordanian forces controlled the West Bank and Jerusalem, but there were not terrorist attacks there either. Why was occupation by Jordan and Egypt not a problem for the Palestinians?
Consider this: the mayor of Tel Aviv is from a party that got less than 5% of the vote in the last national elections in Israel, but the media is going nuts over his statement. No other substantial party in Israel agrees with what the mayor has to say. Just imagine that Jill Stein of the American Green Party made a statement like this about America and the world press went crazy discussing it. That's as close as we can come to an equivalent.
