This morning, a member of the Syrian air force flew his MIG to Jordan and asked for asylum. This presents a rather ticklish situation. Jordan, obviously, does not wish to get into a battle with the Assad regime in Syria. It is likely that the pilot will get asylum since to send him back is a death sentence. But what happens to the fighter jet? Will the Jordanians send it back so that it can be used against the rebels, or will they turn the jet over to the rebels to use agains the Assad forces? My prediction is that the answer will be that Jordan will hold the plane for the foreseeable future pending negotiations with the Syrians. In other words, there will just be delay which will end only when one side or the other in Syria is on the verge of victory.
