The Supreme Court of Egypt invalidated the recent elections for Parliament this morning. Once the ruling was announced, the armed forces took control and said that they will name an assembly of 100 people who will write a new constitution for the country. It is less than clear if the runoff election for President will go ahead in the near future as scheduled. Either this was a triumph for the rule of law, or, more likely, a military coup. One thing that is certain, however, is that the government headed by the Muslim Brotherhood is out.
I will be very curious to see if and how president Obama reacts to these events. After all, Obama was out there very early in the demonstrations in Egypt telling Mubarak that he had to go. Will Obama now have an opinion as to how Egypt must be governed? It certainly would not surprise me if he does. Of course, it will be hard to explain why speaking out on Egypt is fine while ignoring Syria and the many thousands murdered there is also fine.
It would be nice if the USA had a coherent policy in the Middle East. Anything would be better than the chaos of Obama's "positions".
