In another of the many recent efforts by president Obama to walk back bad statements by himself or his supporters that might hurt his re-election prospects, Obama rushed to take back what he said at his press conference earlier today. At that time, Obama said that "the private economy is doing fine." Mitt Romney immediately took Obama to task for missing the fact that the economy is anything but fine. Millions upon millions of folks are out of work; home prices are in the toilet; growth is declining; and Obama is doing nothing about it and seems to have no idea how to help make things better. Since Romney obviously has the better of that argument, Obama just decided to quickly retreat. Basically, he denied the whole thing. Here is what he told reporters about four hors after the first statement:
"It is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine, that's the reason I had a press conference,"
One has to wonder if Obama even knows what it is that he reads off the teleprompter.
