Carter Hull, the first IRS staffer named in DC

Ever hear of Washington attorney Carter Hull?  According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Hull is an attorney employed at the IRS in Washington who was directly involved in the "processing" (and I use that word loosely) of applications for tax exempt status from Tea Party groups.  Transcripts of interviews by Congressional investigators (both Democrat and Republican) of IRS agents in Cincinnati resulted in Hull being identified as directing the questioning of Tea Party groups and "micromanaging" the process.  According to the transcripts, Hull sent sample questions to be asked to the Tea Party groups, received all responses, and told the agents in Cincinnati how to respond.  Here is the Wall Street Journal article with more complete information.

There is more in the WSJ article, but let's stop and focus on the part I outlined above.  This testimony, given under oath, should be the death knell of the silly excuse that the White House still uses that the entire persecution of the Tea Party was carried out by two rogue agents in Cincinnati.  The story was clearly wrong, since something like twenty different agents and their managers had already been identified, but now we have the first name of someone at the Washington office of the IRS giving direction.  No doubt Hull will have his own date with the investigators where he will either confirm what has been said and provide a further trail up the chain of command or he will be able to show that he had no involvement despite what the Cincinnati agent said.

The search is getting closer to finding out who it was that actually gave the order to target the Tea Party and to harass conservatives.  Indeed, a thorough investigation will knock down the ridiculous defenses put up by the administration until the truth actually comes out.  Let's hope that Congress focuses on this matter long enough to uncover the truth.  America deserves to know.
