The Latest Triumph of the Iranian Expeditionary Force in Syria

For much of the last year, the Assad forces have been losing to the rebels in Syria.  Although Assad had far better weapons, his forces were bogged down by two facts:  first, the overwhelming majority of the Syrian people are against him and support the rebels.  Second, the brutality of Assad's attacks on his opponents have managed to horrify many of Assad's supporters and to turn those people against him.

In the last month or so, that situation has turned around.  The Assad forces are now advancing and the rebels are in retreat.  Credit for this change really should be given to president Obama whose lack of fortitude has been the main cause of the transformation.  About a month ago, word came that the Assad forces had crossed the red line set by Obama and used chemical weapons.  Although Turkey, Israel and France all found evidence of the use of chemical weapons and although even the CIA found it likely that the weapons were used, Obama did nothing. Instead, he hid behind the claim that he was studying the issue further to make sure that there was full evidence to confirm that Assad had used the chemical weapons.

This lack of reaction by Obama when a red line that he had announced himself was crossed demonstrated to everyone in the Middle East that Obama would not react to any provocation in that area.  Obama showed the US to be the proverbial paper tiger about which the Chinese used to write.  Among those noticing the lack of America response were Iran and its terrorist subsidiary Hezbollah.  This terrorist duo realized that they need no longer fear an American response were they to engage their forces in Syria.  In short order, more Iranian troops were sent to "assist" Assad and Hezbollah engaged nearly all of its fighting force to help Assad retain power.  And Iran and Hezbollah were correct; the USA under Obama did nothing.  Indeed, Obama has not even bothered to talk about the introduction of tens of thousands of foreign fighters in the Syrian mess.

The new fighters on the Assad side have changed the momentum in the war.  These folks do not care about killing Syrians.  They are prepared to take towns or villages at great cost to the local population without even giving it a second thought.  Today, it was confirmed that the strategic city of Qaisir was lost by the rebels to the Assad forces.  Thousands died in the fight for this city.

America has the power easily to change the trajectory of this fighting.  Obama, however, won't use it.  Intstead, Obama will sit by and watch as a major portion of the Middle East is sucured for Iran, the country in that region that is our mose implacable foe.  It is a disaster.
