Since it has been a few hours since there was anything new in the world of the IRS scandal, it is time to bring out a few more facts that have surfaced. We have now learned that the IRS audited contributors to Freedom Watch, a conservative group, and that it tried to impose gift taxes on individuals who gave money to that organization. The effort was made by the IRS group supervised by Lois Lerner of Fifth Amendment fame, but the agents involved were not among those who dealt with the approval of tax exempt status. This means that we now have another batch of "rogue agents" working for Lerner. Sorry, I could not resist that description since it is so ridiculous. Actually, the existence of this new group of agents is another nail in the coffin of the original IRS/Obama cover story for the IRS attack on conservative groups and individual.
To be clear, the IRS had not tried for two decades to impose gift taxes on any contribution to a tax exempt organization. Twenty years earlier, the IRS effort to do so had ended in defeat in court followed by a change in the law by Congress which made it nearly impossible for the IRS to succeed in such an effort. That means that the IRS was going after these conservative contributors not because the agency expected to win, but only in order to harass them. The IRS was acting in a political vendetta pushed by the Obamacrats in Washington.
