Rubio Throws In the Towel

Senator Marco Rubio has spent the last six months focused mainly on immigration "reform".  For most of that time, the senator has made the rounds of various talk shows telling everyone who would listen that his plan (and the gang of eight plan) required the border to be closed before anthing else happened like legalization of the illegals already here.  Rubio argued that the only way to get border security and to prevent another wave of illegal immigration would be to make proper border security a condition to the granting of legal status to the millions of illegals across America.  Many who have reviewed the current version of the senate bill have said that despite Rubio's arguments, the bill itself does not really require border security to come first.  Now, Rubio has admitted as much.

Over the weekend, Rubio was interviewed on a Spanish language program and said that legalization would come first, before border security.  In other words, Rubio either has changed his mind or the entire campaign he has been waging has been false.  We shall have to wait and see what that means when Congress votes on the various proposals during the next year.  Rubio is only one vote.

For Rubio's future, however, this campaign has been a disaster.  A high profile flip (assuming he was not lying all along) on an emotional issue will not endear Rubio to the electorate that will pick the GOP standard bearer in 2016.  Rubio can now join Chris Christie on the pile of severely damaged potential nominees.

Senator Cruz today made a lucid and compelling presentation on the flaws in the immigration bill and specific amendments which he had put forth to correct these flaws. Of course, his proposals were not accepted by the committee considering this awful legislation. He is a thoughtful and articulate conservative spokesman and will be a viable presidential candidate. As such, he will be smeared often and viciously by Democrats.
