I commented this morning on the appointments by president Obama of Susan Rice (better known as Rice-a-phony for her lies about Benghazi) as National Security Advisor and Samantha Power as UN Ambassador. Naming a bald faced liar (or incompetent fool -- take your pick) to the NSC and an anti-semite to the UN are truly horrible moves in my opinion. I was wondering what the "progressive" reaction to the picks would be from the left. We now know. That view is best summed up by Peter Beinart in today's Daily Beast. To put it mildly, Beinart and the left are thrilled with the selections.
Beinart seems most happy because in making the selections Obama made clear that he does not care in the least about what Republicans or conservatives think of the choices. Indeed, Beinart conflates these two choices with the naming of Hagel as Secretary of Defense and Kerry as Secretary of State to indicate that Obama is now free of all restraints from his opponents as he propounds American foreign policy.
To Beinart, it is wonderful that we now have a Defense Secretary who denounces the "Jewish Lobby", a UN ambassador who wants to use American troops to force Israel to relinquish Palestine, a National Security Advisor who is unable to recognize phony stories from actual intelligence and a pompous Secretary of State who thinks that foreign policy is actually about him rather than the United States. "Hallelujah", shouts Beinart, Democrats are out from the shadow of Vietnam. Obama can carry out "the kind of big, controversial foreign-policy initiative that would have been too risky in his first term."
It is sadly amusing to watch the left rejoice at the end of any coherent use of American power as a force for good in the world. Will 100,000 innocent people die in Syria? It doesn't matter. Obama will ignore that. He is going for a "big, controversial" move on foreign policy. Maybe he will push for new restrictions on green house gases. After all, in the world according to the progressives, a climate change hoax is way more important than a tenth of a million people. After all, we need to remember that all those dead folks are no longer breathing out carbon dioxide.
I just hope that the world and the USA can hold on until Obama is gone. It is not going to be easy.
