Not long ago, the senate passed a bill to force all internet companies to collect sales taxes for all 9600 US jurisdictions. While companies that did less than one million dollars in sales were exempt from the law, the bill was still a small company killer. Just imagine the problem of collecting sales taxes for just the fifty states without considering all those local sales taxes as well. No small company doing 1.5 or 2 million dollars in sales (with a profit of one or two hundred thousand dollars need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to comply with a sales tax measure of that sort.
Now word has come that the House will not be taking up the bill. While that could change in the future, it seems that for now, at least, the sales tax bill is dead.
