A Major Step Forward

The President issued an Executive Order today declaring a national emergency and barring any company from using equipment made in certain countries to control the power grid in the USA.  This may sound like nothing major, but that's wrong.  This is big, really big.

Let's be clear what the nature of the threat is.  Because of globalization, many computerized control devices used around the world are now made in China.  Things like 5G phone systems and the power grid could easily come to have a substantial portion of their controllers manufactured by a company like Huawei which is basically under the control of the Chinese Communist Party.  Imagine if those devices contained a backdoor that allowed the Chinese, in a moment of major confrontation between our nations, to start causing chaos in the US phone system or power grid.  That sort of backdoor might be discovered, but maybe not.  Letting the Chinese have such an opportunity is roughly the equivalent of having two race car drivers start a race in which one driver not only has control of his own car but he can also disrupt the ability of the second driver to control that second car.  It's a recipe for total disaster.

The Executive Order is a no - brainer.  No doubt, the media and the Democrats will denounce it as racist or xenophobic or some such thing.  They haven't done it yet, but it is worth noting that among the ten or so senators and congressmen who have commented on the order, all are supporting it but all are Republican.
