The President's Speech

After watching the speech by President Trump and the response by the Democrats, I have the following comments:

1.  I thought that the President delivered his speech in a manner that was not his usual style.  He was much more serious and stern.  He was clearly reading a prepared text; there were no ad libs.  After that, Speaker Pelosi spoke and was totally wooden in her delivery.  When senator Schumer spoke, Pelosi stood next to him looking like a medical cadaver.  Schumer's delivery was better than Pelosi's but it still wasn't very good.  On the basis of style, I would say that Trump did not do as well as usual, but he was a lot better than the two stone-faced Democrat automatons.

2.  The substance was also something on which I think Trump did better.  He spoke about the need to cut off the 90% of the heroin which comes into our country from Mexico.  It doesn't take a genius to realize that having a border wall in desolate areas of states like New Mexico and Arizona will force the drug smugglers to bring the drugs through checkpoints where they are much more likely to be exposed and arrested.  That's also true of the many people crossing the border illegally.  The Democrats seemed to ignore that logic.  They said that the wall was expensive and unnecessary.  Then they said how much they favored border security.  It made no sense.

3.  The Democrats attacked Trump for using fear.  The problem is that I didn't hear any appeal to fear.  It is not using fear to recite the facts and ask for help in getting a resolution.  It is not fear to demonize the criminal elements who are included among the illegal aliens.  It is not fear to point out that we need to stop the flow of heroin.  The Democrats also attacked Trump for not telling the truth, but they did not provide even one example of misinformation put forward by the President.  Their charge was unbelievable to me.

We will see what happens next, but I think that the President did, by far, better than the Democrats to advance his cause tonight.
