It has been a really bad week for the Democrats in Virginia.
1. First governor Northam was filmed explaining that he supported a bill to allow abortion up to actual delivery of the child. Then he was asked what would happen if a child survived an abortion attempt and he actually said that the mother and the doctor would hold a conversation so that they could decide whether or not to just let the child die. It really is a first for a major American politician to advocate for infanticide. There should have been no recovery from that, but then things got worse.
2. Next, Northam's picture from his med school yearbook emerged on line and it showed Northam in a picture with another person, one in blackface and the other in a KKK robe. That was horrible, bur then it got worse. Northam's undergraduate yearbook was checked and in that volume he gave his nickname as "coonman". Then Northam made all this much worse.
3. Northam held a press conference and apologized for appearing in that photo but said that's not who he is now. Then within 12 hours of admitting it was he in that picture, he came back in front of the cameras and denied he was in the picture. He even claimed that he had never seen the picture before. That seems ridiculous, but Northam then went on to say that he had appeared in blackface that same year when he competed in a dance contest dressed as Michael Jackson. That put things over the edge for Northam. Every Virginia Democrat as well as nearly every national Democrat called for him to resign, but then things got worse.
4. Northam refused to resign and there was chaos in Richmond as legislators looked into whether or not they could impeach him for an old photograph. (Most likely they can't.) Then the next problem hit.
5. Yesterday, a story broke on line that Lt Governor Fairfax , another VA Democrat who would become governor were Northam to resign, had assaulted a woman while the two were at the Democrat National Convention in 2004. The woman came forward and had details or where and when the alleged assault happened and why she hadn't reported it to police at the time.
6 Within hours, Fairfax denounced the story told by the woman as completely untrue. He further pointed out that the Washington Post had been given the story by the woman last year and had determined that it was filled with inconsistencies and unlikely items so that the Post had chosen not to publish it. That was terrible, but then things got worse.
7. Today, Fairfax made clear that he blamed governor Northam for the release of this story in order to try to dissuade the legislature from removing Northam (which would make Fairfax governor.) Northam's people called that preposterous. After the two top Democrats were shooting at each other, things got worse.
8. This afternoon, the Washington Post denied Fairfax's claim that the paper had found inconsistencies or unlikely items in the woman's story. The paper said only that it had no way to corroborate her story. So Fairfax was not telling the truth about the Post, but then things got worse.
9. Fairfax this afternoon admitted that he knew the woman in question. They had indeed met at the Democrat convention in 2004. And get this: they did indeed have a sexual encounter. Fairfax now says that it was purely consensual. He also says that he never saw her again.
So the story told by the woman which Fairfax called completely untrue turned into a consensual sexual encounter. To say the least, Fairfax looks like he is lying.
Will things get worse for the Democrats in Virginia? We'll have to wait and see. Will whoever is next in line to be governor will be discovered to be a drug smuggler? Tune in tomorrow for the next installment.
